July 28, 2012 Prayer Nudge from East Africa

As Olympics 2012 begins, students at the Nairobi Baptist Centre sang the Kenyan national anthem at their annual sports day.  All the East African (1) national anthems may be played at the Olympics awards’ ceremonies WITH the exception of the anthem for the new country of South Sudan.  BUT a proud young South Sudanese, competing under the Olympic flag, says, That I will be in the Olympics means a lot not just to me, but to my country, which has gone through so much… Even if I am not going to carry or wear the flag, I will be the flag of my nation. South Sudan will be in my heart." (2)

July 25, 2012

For days, I’ve made notes by pen, on the computer and in my mind as I prepared for this week’s update.  One of my first jobs this morning was to take photos of our Kindles (electronic book).  Next I downloaded the most recent post of 2012 Prayer Nudges from East Africa (1) onto my Kindle, which included viewing my CLOUD setting – not a cloud filled with potential rain drops, but an ‘unseen’ cloud storing facts, photos, etc. which ‘rains’ down onto one’s computer, Kindle, iPad, even one’s phone!
Then, I sat down for my morning devotions and the first verse I read was:  “I want you to remember… our ancestors... They were under the protection of the CLOUD, and all passed safely through…”(1 Corinthians 10:1) I’m not sure if this was a reminder of our Father’s sense of humour, an affirmation that I was listening to the Holy Spirit’s guidance or a little of both!
I began thinking of sharing how the internet helps our work after reading “Why it’s bad idea not to be on the Internet”  (Daily Nation, 7/20/10, Jobs/1).  I often have to defend my current job relying upon Social Media.  Many people are still leery, with good reasons, of how information is shared via the internet, and like most things, it can be misused, but it can also be a great tool for sharing what God is up to in our part of the world with a large and ready audience.
This morning, I also used the internet to listen to the newest song recorded by a Kenyan Christian singer.  In “Wewe Mkuu”(2), this friend shares his testimony of God being the Great One in his life.  While listening to this Kiswahili song, I used the internet to find 1 Corinthians 10:1 – to  make sure I was copying the verse correctly (3).  I also googled/ searched to find if the Kiswahili Bible was available via the internet, not just to buy, but to read via computer.  It is and the site is listed below (4).  And yes, one of the few things that I ‘bought’ via the internet to read on my Kindle is the NIV Bible, and though it may show my age, I still like my faithful study Bible in printed book form for my devotions!
As Jack serves as the Trainer/ Liaison with the established Baptist work in Kenya, he also often spends hours each day on the internet.  This is the way he reports monthly on the progress of evangelization and church planting among Kenya’s People Groups – partially based on information he receives via emails and cell phone calls/ text messages (we have not had a land-line phone for years) from Kenyan Baptists leaders.  He downloads books to his computer and Kindle to expand his teaching resources which he uses in our churches, associations, Bible Schools and seminary.  He uses e-mails also to correspond with past and future Baptist volunteers.  The internet is also the way he pays bills and deals with our health insurance.   The internet does provide him with a bit of fun each day as he catches up on sports, especially of his alma mater, Wake Forest University.
Another ‘internet’ joy for the both of us is using Facebook to keep up with our kids and viewing their posts which share their lives and experiences and we especially enjoy receiving lots of new photos of our 3 year old granddaughter!  Jack said I should also share another ‘internet’ perk – the games I play daily on my computer and my Kindle – my favorites:  Sudoku and Codeword!
I’m sure that as soon as I post this update to you, I will think of lots of other ways that we use all the gadgets which were not available when we began our work in Kenya in 1978, but I will close and send this on to you. Oops… I just remembered two more gifts of internet:  First, I could not send this update so quickly to you if we didn’t have internet, e-mail, blogs, etc.  Second, we are able to share the things we see and experience that bring us joy – including viewing the boys in our younger kids’ Sunday School class as they enthusiastically took their turn last Sunday singing a song!  Bert

July 22, 2012 Prayer Nudge from East Africa

'July 15th Nudge' UPDATE with the family’s adventures while returning to their Samburu home.  7:00 AM Thursday: “Getting ready to start our journey to Maralal… would appreciate prayer.”  1:30 PM: “Fog and wheel issues make slow going.  Need prayers.” 2:30 PM “leaving pavement. raining.  prayers appreciated.”  5:00 PM: “Keep praying.  Not home yet.  Trucks stopping on the muddy roads.” 7:30 PM: “Finally made it to Maralal. One bent rim, vehicles on the one lane/two way dirt road refusing to yield or move, stalled trucks in high water, fog, elephants crossing the road. But, we made it. Thanks for your prayers.”  More of their story tomorrow!

July 18, 2012

Possibly not a short, but definitely late update this week  thanks to my being totally exhausted after preparing the promised ‘visual’ report of the second anniversary of our church, Parklands Baptist Church/ Mombasa Road.  Please take time to view this report of urban work in East Africa, entitled “Telling of His Glory, Speaking of His Might” at https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151255718260130.559326.685050129&type=1&l=bac37813cd.
Another reason for today’s delay is electricity that has been coming and going!  The third reason is simply that when I get cold, my mind refuses to cooperate and it is in the low 60’s in our house today.  But I shouldn’t complain, it is even colder in southern Africa and we have had a few bursts of warming sunlight this week! Which is unlike last week when we were attending our annual cluster/mission meeting at Brackenhurst, which is a few thousand feet higher than Nairobi!

Last week, we only spotted the sun during a few very, very short bursts during our meeting and we didn’t spot it at all some days, but we did experience many damp and cool ‘in the clouds’ moments!  Otherwise, it was a good meeting as we heard how God is at work in East Africa.  The best part, as always, was times of fellowship with old friends and many new ones and spending time with our mission nieces and nephews.
I know that staying busy is one way to warm-up and Jack and I have done that this week.  Jack is organizing his books (a job he has wanted to do for years) and reading his new books on Baptist history, faith and practices.  Which means he will be soon be busy revising his teaching materials!  So join him in praying as he works at ‘refining’ what he shares with Baptist churches, associations and our seminary students.
I’ve been busy preparing Prayer Nudges and working on the upcoming Ramadan focus as well as preparing for this year’s Lottie Moon focus.  I’m also busy with other ideas/ improvements that I want to include in my work of sharing what God is doing in East Africa and how you can join in His work through prayers, finances and personnel.   For a view of this last week’s Prayer Nudges, go to 2012 Prayer Nudges from East Africa.* Pray for me as I update blogs and plan new focuses in addition to my usual work.
So, as promised, I will quit before this becomes the usual epistle. Thank you for your assurance of prayers.  If you want an assurance that we do value your prayers, check out today’s and yesterday’s Nudges!  BERT

July 15, 2012 Prayer Nudge from East Africa

In a recent meeting of missionaries, a colleague shared:  “We have just returned from Stateside Leave and I will miss being with family and friends.  I will especially miss their hugs.  We have good friends among our People Group, but they do not express affection or appreciation in touchy/ feely ways.  Thanks for reminding me that we are God’s children, we are family.  Thanks for your hugs!”  Pray for this missionary family as they return to their People Group, a warrior tribe who are accepting our Father’s love – a tribe who can be Warriors for Christ among neighboring warrior tribes! For more of this missionary’s story, go to: http://www.samburuofkenya.org/blog/

July 11, 2012

Believe it or not, today’s update is short, very short as I am at our mission meeting and the schedule is so tight that I simply don’t have time to share.  AND what I want to share, what I’m really excited about sharing with you, will take time, so you will get that report  next week.  BUT I will give you a small preview which appears as today’s Prayer/ What God is Doing Nudge.*  SO enjoy the photo and the caption and be ready for the more familiar long update with a report of an incredible view of what happens when God answers our prayers and blesses the work He calls His servants to join Him in doing!  BERT

July 11, 2012 Prayer Nudge from East Africa: As you hear from missionaries, the focus in often on prayer needs, but God’s servants also experience lots of joys and praises!  Two missionaries in East Africa shared a special joy recently - a service celebrating the second birthday of their church family.   The unexpected joy of the day?  Spotting the newest Sunday School class - a toddlers class.  The really exciting part?  All the class members were born after the first service of this church – including the little one at the far end of the table who was born three days after his Mom, Dad and big sisters attended the first service!

July 8, 2012 Prayer Nudge from East Africa

Not part of a reality show, but REAL life of coworkers serving in rural East Africa among people in need of our Father’s love and salvation:  “Our last visit to our 'local' bank took 6 hours – Never imagined that I would be praising God for a banking trip taking ONLY 4 hours!  A new math problem to use with our kids while homeschooling:  New bridges equal what time reduction in a journey?  Plus, slogging through less water was nice!” Today’s photo was not shared by this friend, but they might have spotted these animals during their bank safari!

July 4, 2012

The breeze coming in the window beside my office niche is registering in the low 60’s at the moment and was in the high 50’s earlier this morning – not at all the temperatures expected today by friends celebrating  America’s birthday!  But, it is winter in East Africa and rather chilly in Nairobi.  But to be honest, other than hating wearing so many layers of clothing, I prefer this over the heat many of you are experiencing at the moment – heat we avoided by just a few hours.

Which leads to a confession.  I didn’t want to mislead you, but we were on vacation last month.  Living on a mission compound in Nairobi of three houses, we felt it un-wise to announce our absence which meant no residents on the compound!  Thankfully within a day or two, all three homes will once again have occupants, so I can now safely share that we spent the month of June in North Carolina, only a few miles from our kids! It was great to share lots of special meals and visits, trips to parks and museums, VBS, etc.
We expected our youngest daughter, Jessie, to be preparing for a move, but all three were!  Jessie, who has just completed two years at Southeastern Seminary, which included missions classes, beginning Arabic and lots of counseling courses, will begin her Masters of Teaching at the University of NC in August.  She continues to dream of teaching in an international school.   John, our oldest child, and Melanie moved into a 115 year old house during June.  Only a home renovator and professional cleaner/ organizer could  have seen the value of this house, but all their hard work is already helping the rest of us see the beauty of the little house they hope to own one day!  Jennifer (our middle child), Aaron, and Bella decided it was time to leave apartment life and gave us a lesson on the ups and downs of buying a home. They will also be moving later this month to their new home which met all their heart’s desires – An easy commute to Jennifer’s work (event planner with the NCSU/CALS alumni), a home office for Aaron (Internet advisor), and most importantly, an incredible playground a block away with swings – three year old Bella’s number one requirement for a house!
We usually keep up with Kenya news when we are in the States, but this time, we decided to give ourselves a total break, which meant we missed lots of news that leads to prayer! Would you join us in praying for Kenya as preparations are made for elections next March and for added insecurities and happenings – from a politician dying in a helicopter crash (it is not known if this was an accident or part of the local political tensions) to continued bombings in churches and other places (some define these as terrorists attacks, others are unsure of the cause).
Yes, all of this is a little scary, but I will close today’s update with a bit from the Prayer Nudge I posted yesterday: “Illnesses and death… confusion and corruption, bombings and helicopter crashes - all bits of current East African news.  How do missionaries continue being their Father's heart, hands and voice with confidence and peace?  By recognizing that the devil is active and ... remembering and doing what is suggested in a chorus most learned as children:  ‘Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in his wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace.’”  BERT

June 30/July 1, 2012 Prayer Nudge from East Africa

Friday/Saturday, June 29/30, 2012  In the blaring sun on Lake Victoria, it is hard to see this man's face, but there is no doubt that somehting has caught his attention.  Is he watching fish jumping, other fisherman succeeding in their morning's work, or...  Pray for Believers in East Africa as they approach people that usually have unknown experiences, stories, and needs.  Pray that they will rely upon the Holy Spirit's guidance as they share their experience, their story and how their Heavenly Father is meeting their needs.  The answer to what this man is watching will be shared in tomorrow's nudge!

Sunday/July 1, 2012  The fisherman in yesterday’s nudge was watching a baptism of 80 new Believers! A missionary shared:  “As others sang praises, the Believers walked out to be baptized 3 at a time – the result of many pastors on the islands of Lake Victoria being very faithful. The long line of those awaiting baptism was jumping with excitement, with the greatest joy coming as each took their turn of being buried with Christ in baptism and raised to walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:4)” Praise God for these new Believers. Pray that the fisherman will learn of the one who called others to be fishermen of men.
