September 28, 2013 SSAPeoples Nudge to Action

“IMB missionaries recount terrorists seizure of Nairobi mall”* is not just one more current news report; it shares how “Sometimes living in the center of God’s will is dangerous... But God is good… God will use this to bring glory to Himself, which He always does.” It is also provides nudges to prayer for this and other crises.

Thank You for your Prayer Support!

One of the three helicopters was back
yesterday, flying lower than ever!  Friends
living miles away also include the constant
buzz of helicopters as one of their 'stressors'!
Life is somewhat back to normal at our house with Jack travelling daily to KBTC as I work at home. There are still blasts and smoke as clean-up goes on at the Westgate Mall, but we are dealing with the stress. It was disheartening this morning to recognize two faces among the 3 employees at the biggest store in the mall who died. Thank you for your prayers and for sharing our prayer requests during the siege. Please continue praying for physical, emotional and spiritual healing as thousands have been personally affected by the attack.

September 25, 2013

After being at home since noon last Saturday,
Jack was ready to get back to work today
at the Kenya Baptist Theological College.
My first thought as we heard the first rounds of grenades and gunfire last Saturday around 12:30 was my thought at mid-day the previous day.  As I did often, I had once again asked myself as I left the Westgate Mall with milk, yoghurt, bread and eggs, “How long will it be before terrorists make good their threats and attack a public place such as this?”

I also needed a change of venue, so
today's update was composed and sent
from the Principal's desk at KBTC.
In the last few days as I watched scenes shared on local and international news, my thought has been:  “How strange it seems to know that if our friends knew where to look, they could spot the roof of our house as they watch the news of the ongoing siege.”  Yes, that is how close we live to Westgate Mall.  We listened to the news, but we often knew more than was being reported – such as after a large blast and more firing around four yesterday afternoon, the helicopters (which had hovered over our house 72+ hours) left and we knew the siege was over, although it was not announced until three hours later.

One of three helicopters, our constant
companions this past week!  This morning
an armoured was among the police and
army vehicles along our street - AND YES,
we stopped and thanked them for their work!
Were and are we still a bit stressed?  YES, but we knew the situation was covered in prayer, which is one reason we never felt at risk. AND more than once we thanked God that our home’s exterior and interior walls are thick quarried stones!  We felt free to walk around our yard, but we and our upstairs neighbors relied upon God’s gift of ‘common sense’ to head back inside at times!  The IMB offered a place in a quieter spot, but we and our nearby co-workers felt it was best to stay in our homes.

Spotted beside our property along the
path to Westgate yesterday.  I wanted to
ask the sleeping man, "Are you waiting
for someone still held in the Mall?"
Our major thoughts and prayers were and continue to be for our many friends, acquaintances and other working and shopping at the mall.  For a while our prayers where specifically for an IMB family not only in the mall, but separated during the first few hours of the siege.  I was able to ‘converse’ with the husband via Facebook on his cell phone and he was able assure his wife via her cell phone that we were close by and waiting for them upon their release!  Lots and lots of prayers of thanksgiving have been given for cell phones in the last few days!

Shared this morning on my FB page by a friend
among Peoples in northern Kenya and South
Sudan. These Turkana are praying and grieving a
lost family member in the Westgate attack.
We are certain that among the greatest moments of joy of our lives will be when Jack (at the end of the dirt path we use to walk to Westgate, along the street many of you viewed on the news) and I (alerted by Jack via cell phone to head his way) spotted the wife and younger kids walking towards us and then as we received the gift of giving them hugs!  YES, we knew some would think Jack especially was too close to the action, but on the mission field co-workers become family and we wanted them to spot family as quickly as possible after their release! When the Dad and older son escaped, they were sent to the other end of our street and a co-worker collected them, so we still are waiting to give them hugs.

A view of the smoke which began
coming from the Mall on Monday -
taken from a neighbour's yard.
Yet another thought that I’ve often had since mid-day last Saturday: That I was 100% correct in disagreeing with a friend who once said that missionaries should not use Facebook!  As I shared on one of my Facebook work pages (1) last night, “THANK YOU for your prayers. You have definitely reaffirmed my belief in FB and social media being incredible prayer tools!”

The prayer value of social media was also affirmed when news of the Westgate fire was posted on Facebook and blogs, including the IMB’s CompassionNet FB (2) site.  Based on what I can document and ‘intelligent’ guesses, more than 10,000 people viewed this prayer item within a few hours!

Poinsettias are in our back yard - the flat cream in the
lower right corner, behind an apartment building and
an office building,  in the lower right is Westgate Mall.
We learned today that Social Media also guided prayers for the mall siege and for us last Sunday at our church, Parklands Baptist Church/ Mombasa Road. Due to the ongoing sounds from Westgate, we had felt it wise to stay at home, but as friends received our messages via Facebook and cell phone, they shared the updates with others at church, even interrupting the class and services!

Photo used last week in "To the Ends of the Earth.
Other thoughts which surfaced in my mind and heart after it was confirmed that the mall attack was an act of terrorism, were the words that I shared last week in “To the Ends of the Earth” (3).  In the photo album, this prayer nudge was included with a series of photos:  Do I/ we/ you truly desire for all People to claim the promise we have received from our heavenly Father….the promise to "Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other" (Isaiah 45:22 NIV)?

A blessing God sent my way
spotted in our yard this week!
Thank you for responding to our requests for prayers in the last few days.  Would you please join us in praying now for physical, emotional and spiritual healing for all those affected by the attack on Westgate?  Would you also pray that Believers will not focus on the evil around them, but focus on our Father’s desire for ALL peoples to claim His gift of Eternal Life – even those who are causing chaos today in Nigeria, Rwanda, Kenya, DRCongo and other Sub-Saharan African countries?  BERT YATES

Praise - Evening of September 24th

Praising God tonight. Kenya has been waiting all day for trustworthy news that the siege is over and it finally was shared by President Kenyatta a few minutes ago. Blasts and shooting continued throughout the day until after four this afternoon, but we now know that we've also been hearing floors collapsing in the mall and explosives being defused. Please continue praying for physical, emotional and spiritual healing for all affected, including one good friend, a pastor, whose cousin is still missing. BERT

September 24th Morning Update

Praising God today that at least 10,000 people spotted yesterday’s Facebook posts about the ongoing siege of Westgate Mall, which led to thousands and thousands of people praying immediately for the need! Thank you for praying. Our God hears and He is responding! Continue praying for physical, emotional and spiritual healing for the thousands affected by this disaster.

On our personal FB pages, I added this note:
Jack and I are overwhelmed by the prayer support that has poured in for the situation at Westgate and for us personally in the last few days. THANK YOU!

As I type, security forces are completing the process of securing the mall, so keep praying. BERT

September 23rd Update of Westgate Siege

This is what was posted earlier this afternoon on my FB pages and shared on others:

URGENT PRAYER REQUEST for the situation at the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya. After security forces made some progress late yesterday afternoon/early evening, it was a quiet night. Things began changing at 6 this morning as security forces sought a final thrust at securing the mall and rescuing the remaining hostages. After a series of blasts within the last 30 minutes, huge clouds of smoke are billowing from a section underground behind the Mall. Please pray for safety for any hostages still in the Westgate Mall and for security forces surrounding and in the mall.

UPDATE at almost 7 in the evening in Kenya:  Security forces are still trying to secure Westgate Mall and it is unknown if any of the hostages have been evacuated during the day, so keep praying.

September 22, 2013 - SSAP Nudge to Action

A peaceful view, but the sounds heard in this neighborhood since mid-day yesterday have not been! The flat roof in the background is the Westgate Mall (Nairobi, Kenya) which is still under attack by people now reported as terrorists. Please pray for God’s peace and comfort for all involved. Pray for changed hearts and open ears and eyes to the true source of peace.

(This is a rather personal SSAP Nudge to Action as the poinsettia in the photo is located in the back-yard of our home in Nairobi.  We do feel safe and have contacted our Kenyan church family and asked that they pray for us 'in absentia' as the roads around our home are closed and we will stay put until things are resolved.)

Urgent Prayer Request for Nairobi - Saturday, September 21, 2013

For those of you who have been praying for Nairobi this afternoon, sorry for the delay in writing, but as one co-worker just shared in her prayer letter, “This is a very tense afternoon in Nairobi.” For us, it has been a very tense and stress filled afternoon in our neighbourhood, beginning at 12:30 with an hour of the explosions of guns and grenades! The large modern mall that you can see from our house (I took a photo, but decided some of you would prefer not to see how close) was attacked by armed gunmen and by sounds we are still hearing sporadically, the police and army have not yet fully entered the mall. We are OK and safe, but many are suffering.

Thankfully, friends who were in the mall were able to escape by mid to late afternoon. It was a true praise and joy to see the Mom and her kids walking towards our house mid-afternoon. There are still conflicting reports, but many have been killed and dozens injured. Would you thank God with us for our friends who are now at home in another part of the city and pray for them as they deal with all they experienced today. They are very thankful for all of you who learned of this via Facebook and Twitter and were praying.

Pray also for all those who have been and are being affected by this senseless event and that the problem will be soon resolved and no one else will be injured. BERT

September 18, 2013

Close-up of photo used as Monday's SSAPeoples
Nudge to Action, sharing one of the contrasts
found in Sub-Saharan African cities.
A friend recently asked, “What is God teaching you?” My answer, “Not what you might expect, but He is teaching me lots!”  So what has God taught me this week as we’ve done many things, including Jack spending hours commuting to and administrating/ teaching at the Kenya Baptist Theological College (KBTC) and as I’ve spent time sharing what God is doing among Sub-Saharan African Peoples?*

Photo which I may have shared earlier that was
used as last Saturday's Nudge to Action.
THURSDAY - I should “Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts” (1 Chronicles 16:8,9.) This is difficult when I’m tired of sitting at my desk with only a computer as a companion or when Jack is working 12+ hour days ‘catching-up’ with the principal’s work at KBTC.
PRAYER REQUEST: Pray for patience and strength.  Pray that Jack’s last few days of teaching Church Planting (one hour most days) and four hours of Baptist History and Church Planting during this current three week term will end well.

A view that always strengthens our hearts -
the first view of the season of
Jacaranda blooms (purple) in our yard.
FRIDAY - Psalm 31 challenged me to choose my reaction when my “strength fails” thanks to the frustrations which will occur as we serve our Father. I can have a ‘pity-party’ and forget to trust Him and acknowledge His goodness or I can praise Him (even if I don’t feel like it) and put my hope in Him!
PRAYER REQUEST: Pray that we will “Be strong and take heart” (v.23) this coming week.

How can anyone not being joyful when
viewing this scene in a neighbour's yard?
SATURDAY - “Sing joyfully to the Lord… it is fitting for the upright to praise him” (Psalm 33:1), led me to when David celebrated before the Lord even when accused of being undignified (2 Samuel 6:20-23).
PRAYER REQUEST:  Pray that we will learn from our African brothers and sisters to not be reserved Americans, but to fully celebrate what God is doing and learn to “Sing to him… and shout for joy” (v. 3).

It is always a joy to serve through praying (for Jack
last Sunday) and through taking photos (Bert's way
of helping our Media Team) at our church.
SUNDAY - Questions from Psalm 34: Do I extol the Lord and praise Him at all times?  Do others hear me rejoicing and boasting of the Lord?
PRAYER REQUEST:  Pray that as we do our Father’s work, Jack and I will rely upon Him and trust that we “lack nothing… lack no good thing” (v 9,10).  Pray that we will claim Him are our refuge and deliverer know that He is attentive to our prayers (v.15).  Pray that we will remember that this is true even for the problems in need of resolution at KBTC.

Rural view of ministering "To the Ends of the Earth."
MONDAY - After the problems encountered in recent months related to KBTC, Psalm 35 is a lot more ‘real’ to us!  There have been and still are times we would like God to ‘contend’ with things the way we think He should!
PRAYER REQUEST: Pray that we will focus on praising God for His righteousness and His desire for all to know of His salvation! Which leads to this week’s photo album, “To the Ends of the Earth”, as I share photos captured this month to challenge Believers to truly claim the power of the Holy Spirit and serve as witnesses of the eternal gospel "to the ends of the earth." **

Not a 'potted' poinsettia at KBTC,
but a small tree outside the offices.
TUESDAY - In Psalm 36, David is concerned about the sin he encounters, but he puts his focus on God’s love, faithfulness, righteousness and justice.
PRAYER REQUEST:  Pray that Jack and I will always remember that as God’s servants, God will provide what we need, as well as the needed guidance (v.8,9) when we seek to obey Him and do the work He has called us to do.

Found in most church offices - a cup of chai (milky
sweet tea) and a Visitor's Book awaiting your greeting.
TODAY - As I read suggested verses and notes related Psalm 36:9, “With you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light,” I was led to Psalm 18.
PRAYER REQUEST:  Pray that as I seek to ‘strengthen’ our co-workers and God’s work among Sub-Saharan African Peoples and as Jack strives to ‘encourage’ (Acts 14:22) KBTC to becoming a school that can truly be used to accomplish our Father’s purposes that we will claim His Words in Psalm 18:28-30.  Pray that we will allow God to keep our lamps burning as he turns our darkness into light. Pray that we will rely upon His help and be willing to aim for the impossible and difficult as we advance against barricades and difficulties, knowing that with God, we can scale what is impossible for man!   BERT YATES

September 16, 2013 SSAPeople Nudge to Action

African cities: Where one finds a Biblical view of a shepherd and her flock BESIDE plastic bag ‘recyclers’ ACROSS the river from a trash dump for millions of people. Continue praying for the 70 IMB workers and Sub-Saharan African urban church leaders in an Urban Strategies training, Sept 8-20. Pray that Believers will reach the cities of Africa with their Father’s Good News.

September 11, 2013

Spotted at lunch time today - beautiful view, but the
water shouldn't be there. Time to call a plumber!
As Jack and I ate breakfast this morning serenaded by birds (one advantage of getting up before sunrise in Kenya*), I asked, “What are your thoughts now that you are back as the Kenya Baptist Theological (KBTC) principal? Are you still certain that God called you to this job?”

Close up of the two birds (right) in the group photo!
Jack’s response: “We are in the restoration** phase, but it is happening!  Yes, the assurances that I’m in the right place keep coming, even as I clean up files and offices. (Necessary, but not his favourite work.) Being back with the staff (Jack’s term for everyone serving at KBTC) is reassuring.  They are so unified. Our usual Monday morning staff chapel ran for two hours as they eagerly shared how God has been at work at KBTC.  AND not everyone who wanted to share had time to do so.”

KBTC staff's welcome to the principal's office.
Since his return last Thursday as the principal at KBTC, I had shared with him the verses from Psalm 68 that I am now claiming for us and for the seminary.  “Praise be to the Lord, to God our Saviour, who daily bears our burdens… Summon your power, O God; show us your strength, O God, as you have done before.” (vv.19,28).  I shared that the reason I was praying these verses for us and the school was answered in verses 34-35 – So that we and the school can be a part now and in the future of “Proclaim(ing) the power of God” (v. 34) because he does have majesty and power and He is “awesome… the God (who)… gives power and strength to his people” (v.35).

Last week's official  'turning over  of  the
keys' by officers of the Baptist Convention
of Kenya (BCOK) began and ended with prayer...
As we talked during breakfast, Jack added that he planned on using ‘my’ verses as his guide at the chapel service at noon yesterday.  But as the day progressed, he knew he needed to challenge the students and staff with the verses he read during his morning devotions.

....followed by hot chai (sweet, milky tea) and cake!
Genesis 50 records that after Joseph’s father died, his brothers were fearful of the future. Remembering past events, “Joseph said to them, ‘Don’t be afraid.” He trusted God to use these problems and frustrations “for good to accomplish” his purposes, his will; his will and purposes which the college wants to accomplish, “the saving of many lives” (vv.19,20).

And as always, the time of celebration
included lots of speeches - this one by the
Moderator of  the BCOK,  Elijah Wanje.
Jack and Elijah first worked together in
the early 1980's as Principal and Vice-
Principal of Mombasa Baptist High School.
Jack assured the students and all those serving at KBTC, “There is much to be done as KBTC becomes again a place that will bring glory and honour to our Father and fully serve His purposes!”  He assured them that we can claim Joseph’s assurance to his brothers, “So then, don’t be afraid” (v.21), because like Joseph would do for his brothers, our God will provide for the needs of KBTC as the staff and students seek to be His servants!

Jack's time included thanking staff and guests for
celebrating with him God's blessings on KBTC.
Please join us using these verses from Psalm 68 and Genesis 50 as prayer guides for us and KBTC.  More nudges to prayer can be found in our January 9th update** when I asked Jack, “How a problem can be solved?”  His response: “We are doing what we know God asked us to do; we have to trust Him to provide the needed help!” Pray that we will continue trusting that God will provide for the needs at KBTC and he has done since January, needs which have been and continue to be great and in the impossible category for men and women!

I will close this week’s update with words Jack sent to friends this past weekend: “We wish to thank the thousands of people around the world who have been praying for us… We are so blessed, strengthened and encouraged by all including Kenyan Baptists and in particular former students, teaching colleagues, the churches of the Baptist Convention of Kenya through constant messages, words of support and prayers.  God has been faithful… and His promises are so true.  What He starts and promises He will accomplish. Now is the time for… friends of KBTC to rejoice, give thanks to God, praise Him for His goodness and unfailing love… (let us) join together to support the college and the vision before it… Let us all give thanks by our actions and re-commitment to His call in our lives.  To God be the glory.

Two added photos spotted last Thursday as we
returned from KBTC to our home in Nairobi.
Look closely - there is a woman between the driver and dresser!
Also along the 45 minute drive, we spotted furniture
being moved by donkey cart and by pick-up, both times
a passing vehicle prevented capturing the view. Sorry,
we missed spotting a bicycle hauling furniture last week!

Special Prayer Item

It took a few days for approval to share our current prayer praises/needs, but we can now thank you for praying for the Kenya Baptist Theological College during the last few months when there was no principal. God blessed the work and prayers of the administration and staff as problems were resolved.  Last Thursday morning, Jack was reinstated as the principal of the college by the leadership of the Baptist Convention of Kenya.

The two men on the left and right of the photo are not smiling at
the moment, but they smiled often last Thursday as they
received a break from doing their assignments and that of
the principal! Although they have done a great job!
I will share more in our weekly Wednesday update as between electricity and internet connection problems, sharing this bit today has taken hours!  But I will add this:  Don't stop praying! There is much to be done as KBTC becomes again a place that will bring glory and honour to our Father and fully serve His purposes!

September 4, 2013

Sorry, if you read this on Wednesday when it was first posted, you may want to re-read it! The section which explains what I learned about 'singing a new song' was deleted as I added photos yesterday!  The mistake has been corrected, which allowed the addition of two more photos!  BERT

View as we travelled to Highridge Baptist Church
last Sunday morning.
Sometimes knowing what to share and what not to share in our updates is difficult – my thoughts as I awoke this morning, thoughts which led to prayer. Then after breakfast, as I prayed again for guidance during my morning devotions, I remembered or I guess I should say, GOD REMINDED ME, that I have lots of readers of our updates who are praying for us!
Jack talking with two long-time pastor friends.
And once again God answered my and your prayers!  By the time I completed my devotions, I knew exactly what I should share with you today!  It all began when I came to Psalm 96, the ‘next’ chapter to be read in Psalms, the book I’m working through at the moment!  This is the guiding words for the Sub-Saharan African affinity, so I’ve often read, used and heard these verses taught.  Today God led me in a new direction after reading the NIV Study Bible note for the first half of verse 1, “Sing to the LORD a new song.”

Jack also made a new friend - who is
is already dressing like a pastor!
The note sent me to a note for Psalm 33:3, a reminder that singing a new song to my Father and shouting for joy is all about “Celebrating God’s saving act.”  That note sent me to the note for Psalm 7:17, which describes giving “thanks to the Lord for his righteousness” and singing “praise to the name of the LORD MOST HIGH,” as a “vow to praise.” The next sentences caught my attention:  “Many prayers… include such vows in anticipation of expected answer to prayer… praise must follow deliverance as surely as prayer springs from need.”

Watching a group of kids this attentive in a worship
service definitely brings joy to missionaries!
The notes for Psalm 7:17 referred to the note for Psalm 9:1, “I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart.  I will tell of all your wonders.” The NIV Study Bible Psalm 9:1 note explains that the Hebrew for tell of is translated later as “declare” and that this kind of praising God is “rarely a private matter between the psalmist and the Lord.  It is usually a public celebration of God’s hoy virtues… his saving acts… (and) bestowal of blessings.”

Bert also spotted lots of views which will
become SSAP Nudges to Action some day!
So what do I want to share with you today?  I want you to join us in “Praising God will all our hearts,” the title of a new slide show sharing photos to help you celebrate with us and give thanks for the times He sent gifts and blessings our way this last week. Times of gifts and blessings such as last Thursday when I questioned if I were doing my work via the internet in the best way.  You will have to view today’s Nudge to Action for Sub-Saharan African Peoples to read of the two hard-to-miss answers God sent my way!

We visited Highridge Baptist to celebrate
the 45th wedding anniversary of
Rose and Pastor David Kiatu.
Times leading to celebration and thanksgiving last week included good meetings which will enable us to follow God’s call on our lives, views of God’s awesome creations, and sharing a special event with  Kenyan friends! Yes, I’m not sharing everything in this update, but I promise that you will want to take a few minutes to view the links sharing how God did answer your and our prayers this week, links sharing our joy!  BERT
