March 26, 2014

“Igniting a Passion for Missions” – the theme for the 2014 South Carolina WMU Missions Encounter which we had the joy of participating in last Friday and Saturday.  The joy came from meeting so many people who share our passion for missions, which included hundreds of women involved in WMU and the many home, national and international missionaries attending the meeting.

Our 'display table' at the 2014 South Carolina Missions Encounter.
Yes, we were totally exhausted on Monday after speaking five times at this meeting and at two different churches on Sunday, but once again being with others who share or are ‘ignited’ into sharing our passion for missions, also leaves us ‘ignited’ and rejuvenated!  An added joy for Jack was meeting two women who are relatives sharing his family tree with former missionaries in China, Matthew Tyson Yates on his Dad’s side and the Well’s family on his Mom's side!

Time for a bit of honesty – I just realized that I'm possibly too tired to write this update today as I just spent the last five minutes pondering what to write next!  I did get a bit of much needed rest on Monday, but today’s  lack of pizazz comes from working for hours and hours over the last 24 hours updating our Yates-IMB-Kenya&SSAP blogspot – something I had hoped to do for months and something that happened thanks to your prayers (Feb 26th update)!  It is not ‘perfected’, but…

One of the first things you may notice when visiting our personal blog is a new location for the MISSIONS TOOLBOX in a group of tabs under the Yates-IMB-Kenya&SSAP blog title.   I've also added tabs to help you view the daily additions to the Nudges to Action for Sub-Saharan African Peoples and to learn a bit more about the Kenya Baptist Theological College. The last two are found on Facebook, but anyone can view these photos and comments.  If you are not a member of Facebook simply scroll down past the SIGN UP/ LOG in box.

Bert's joy - spotting more daffodils!
As I shared earlier, adding a new ‘tool’ each week to the MISSIONS TOOLBOX  does lead to added work on my part, but when you have a passion for missions you want others to share your passion and the joy that comes from joining our Father in His work.  One way to accomplish this is by adding to your knowledge of social media sites which can strengthen and encourage you to join in God’s work among the Peoples of Sub-Saharan Africa through praying, giving or serving!

Remember to view the daily
Nudges to Action for SSAPeoples.
Even my fingers are tired, so for once, you are getting a slightly shorter update this week!  But, I cannot stop exercising my fingers and mind before I thank you for your prayers for safety in travel and that we would clearly and boldly share what God is doing and the needs in Harvest work.  God is answering your prayers, so please don’t stop praying for us!  BERT YATES

March 19, 2014

Bert has sent our updates from many
places, but this was a first - from the
backseat of a car outside a Cracker Barrell
after having lunch with volunteers!
More than 10 years ago as I prepared a budget request, I remember sitting in my office at Kenya Baptist Media and thinking, “Maybe adding a scripture to my explanation will strengthen my request.” I didn’t do this for ‘spiritual’ reasons, but simply to seek finances which were not likely to be approved.

I don’t remember if the budget was approved, but I do remember my synopsis of the chosen verses, Acts 14:22 and Revelation 14:6.  Why is this memory still strong?  I still end e-mails, letters, reports, etc., with "Strengthening and encouraging as we engage lostness together,” and sometimes include the last bit used in the request, “proclaiming the eternal gospel ‘to every nation, tribe, language and people.’”

No, this isn't rain drops, but ice on a bush!  This
winter is still filled with storms, but God has
provided us with safety in travel and all our big
trips were during the times we could travel safely.
As our job assignments took new directions, we realized that as I wrote that day, God was giving us a sneak preview of how He wanted us involved in His work in the coming years.  Our dream was to move to an area where we could live and work among Unreached/ Unengaged Peoples, but over and over God has made it very clear that our call is to strengthen and encourage Believers, our African brothers and sisters, fellow missionaries, and our supporters in the States, as they work in His Harvest Fields!

Jack speaking to the adults during the Bible
study time at Rich Square Baptist Church last
Sunday - sharing his vision for KBTC.
As the Principal of the Kenya Baptist Theological College, Jack’s ‘heart desire’ is to train and equip African Believers to serve as our Saviour’s witnesses and disciple makers in their “Jerusalem… Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8) My passion is to strengthen and encourage Believers by nudging them to action (prayer, giving and serving) to share the eternal gospel with the many nations, tribes, languages and people still waiting to hear our Good News, especially those in Sub-Saharan Africa!

Sharing our appreciation for prayer support for
for us and for God's work among SSAPeoples!
There are moments when we question if we are missing the real, more exciting action by not working full-time in an area among the Unreached, especially the Unengaged.  But, these doubts are always replaced by joy when we view someone we have touched at work in our Father’s harvest field.

One of the joys of being on STAS -
A special gift to the missionaries
from a five year old.
I’m not quite sure why I’m sharing these words this week, but I’ve learned that when my plans for an update takes a different turn as I write, I must trust that God is answering my prayer for guidance. I also know that as we return (early May) to Kenya, we cannot accomplish what God has called us to do without you,  your prayers, your financial gifts, especially those to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering and the Cooperative Program, and your sending more workers to join us.

The other bit that I must share this week is to thank you for your past prayers, financial gifts and sending or being our co-workers.  There aren’t words to express how much you encourage and strengthen us by your desire to learn more of what we have seen God do in Kenya and among Sub-Saharan African Peoples and how He has blessed your past investments in prayer, giving and serving.

Another joy of STAS - spending time with retired
missionaries from Sub-Saharan Africa!
We have also been strengthened and encouraged as we learn that you do read our weekly updates and pray specifically for us.  One thing that being a ‘foreign’ missionary in Africa has taught us is that one’s greatest assurance of truly obeying God and doing His will is the degree of discouragement and frustrations the devil throws your way!  Which means, the more we obey God and seek to serve Him, the more we really need to know that we are a part of a team of Believers who are engaging lostness together as we seek to proclaim the eternal gospel to “every nation, tribe, language and people.”

Bert's special joy of the week:  Spending
time at a luncheon for retired missionaries
with her second grade teacher, Sue Todd!
LOOK at the end of this update for even
more photos of joy taken this last week!
Once again, what I expected to be a very short update has turned in to an epistle, but I cannot close without sharing our specific prayer requests for this coming week.  We need prayers again this week for safety in travel and that we clearly share what God is doing and the needs in Harvest work as we attend the annual meeting of South Carolina WMU on Friday and Saturday, as we speak in two churches on Sunday, and continue to meet with those desiring to serve in Africa.  BERT

Believers needed to invest time, energy and resources into praying for and taking the Gospel to key Sub-Saharan African unreached people groups (UPGs) and unreached, unengaged people groups (UUPGs) in desperate need of the Gospel. Could the Lord be leading your church to take on this task?  Visit http://subsaharanafricanpeoples.imb.org/explore/view/people-group-map  to learn how you and your church can remove one pin from the map!

Covered-dish luncheons after sharing
with churches are always a time of joy...

on the equator. Another joy - viewing stained-glass
windows in the churches we visit.  The one below was
spotted last Wednesday night at Troutman Baptist.

March 12, 2014

Spotted on Saturday as we
travelled.  We do agree. It is
time for warm weather in NC!
Writing today from a hotel and we need to be checked out in less than an hour, so this update will be written quickly.  I had considered skipping writing an update today, but we are too excited to not share bits of new information we gleaned this week at the HIS WORD/HIS WORLD Scripture translation conference.  We also must thank you for praying that we would travel safely and on time to our planned destinations over the last few days.

It was a true joy to visit with Haymore Memorial Baptist in Mount Airy over the weekend.  It was a definite time of encouragement and strengthening to meet with  women who are excited about celebrating the 100 year of WMU in their church in 2015 and to meet with many of all ages in the church who are excited about being on mission with our Father.

Jack speaking last Sunday! Pray for us as we speak and that we can
always share our passion for joining in God's Work!
Once again (until today) the weather has been incredible as we’ve traveled and we had no problems.  BUT our bodies are a little confused as thanks to springing forward, we awoke an hour earlier in NC on Sunday thanks to the beginning of Eastern Daylight Savings time, turned our clocks an hour back as we crossed into middlel Tennessee and awoke Monday morning on Central Daylight Savings time, then on Tuesday we had returned to EDS time!  Thus we awoke at 6AM on Saturday through yesterday with our bodies losing or gaining an hour for four days straight!’

Acting out the story of Jesus calming the sea during the His Word/
His World conference. Not the most focused photo, but  I loved how
the pastor (Jesus) had such a hard time staying serious as his
church members played the role of  a bunch of passionate disciples!
Our time at the HIS WORD/_ HIS WORLD* conference  was truly a time of being “informed and activated”, which was the desire of the church hosting the conference.  Your prayers were answered as this was a time of meeting others with a passion for learning “how the Bible is translated and made available to Bible-less peoples all around the world” and “how to share Bible stories.”

Jack's treat yesterday.
We had great expectations of this conference, but Jack and I both now feel equipped beyond our expectations as I use the internet to nudge you to action for Sub-Saharan African Peoples and as Jack incorporates these strategies into plans for reviving Kenya Baptist Theological College.  I encourage you to take a few minutes to view today’s additions to your MISSIONS TOOLBOX (shared below), which will allow you to learn many of the things that we learned on Monday!

Jack also had great expectations as he met yesterday with the Lambs in Boiling Springs, NC, who represent the Fellowship of Baptist Educators.  We left our visit knowing we had two new friends and lots of added support for Jack as he works at KBTC.

Bert's treat - spotting daffodils in full bloom!
We will continue meeting with volunteers and speaking today at Troutman Baptist Church, so don’t stop praying for us.  Pray that we will always share our passion for serving our Father in a way that only brings glory to Him and does encourage others to join in His work at the Kenya Baptist Theological College and among Sub-Saharan African Peoples.  Pray for us in the coming week as we seek to get a bit of rest in between local opportunities to share and catch up on lots of work that doesn’t get done as we travel!  BERT

March 10, 2014

Too young to read, but this little one is loves looking at Mom's Bible.  Will you pray for sensitive and open hearts and minds for those learning “how the Bible is translated and made available to Bible-less peoples … and how to share Bible stories” at today’s HIS WORD/HIS WORLD conference in Tennessee.  Pray that this training will lead to more people groups hearing our Good News in their own language.

March 5, 2014

Sitting today at my makeshift work space on the dining room table at our borrowed mission home and listening to Christian music on the internet.  I do miss my private work space (a closet, left photo) in Nairobi, but I love having strong unlimited internet while in the States and listening to music as I work.

Yes, all our going and doing is a bit exhausting, but we truly love travelling around to share what God is doing in Africa and visiting with old and new friends. It may sound trivial, but please join us in praying that we will not only travel safely, but get to our destination on time (Translated: Without getting lost).  Though we have explored new routes (Jack’s definition for ‘getting lost’) twice now, God has somehow guided us in the right direction and we arrived with time to spare!

It was a joy last Sunday to celebrate
the annual WMU Focus Sunday
at Earlys Baptist Church.
After we took a few of those new routes, we did arrive at Earlys Baptist Church (Ahoskie, NC) last Sunday and were able to laugh at Jack’s method of finding the church.  When our GPS tracking device was inaccurate, Jack reverted to his way of finding places in Kenya.  Using the sun, he figured out our north/ south/ east/ west bearings and headed on the road that which he expected the church to be and within a mile, the church appeared!

Continue joining us this coming week in praying that we will clearly and boldly share what God is doing at the Kenya Baptist Theological College (Jack) and among Sub-Saharan African Peoples (Bert) and how others can join in His work through prayer, giving and serving.  Pray also for safety as we begin another long trip next Saturday which will include meeting with a church group (Winston-Salem, NC) desiring more information on serving God in Kenya, speaking at a WMU banquet on Saturday night and two worship services on Sunday in Mount Airy.  That afternoon we will head to Tennessee for a HIS WORD/_ HIS WORLD* conference on Monday!  On Tuesday we will return to North Carolina to visit Gardner Webb University to share what is happening at KBTC, before heading on to Troutman, NC, where we will meet a group who have already served as volunteers in Kenya and speak at their church.

Special photo from the past - Taken at the
dedication of Zimmerman Baptist Church,
a new church plant.  One of the two visible
Bibles is in English, the other in Kiswahili.
Yes, a lot of miles, but we have lots of stories to share of what God is up to in Kenya and all of Sub-Saharan Africa and we want others to know the joy that comes from serving our Father and watching what He can do!  We are especially excited about next Monday’s HIS WORD/HIS WORLD conference and joining with others who share our passion for learning “how the Bible is translated and made available to Bible-less peoples all around the world” and “how to share Bible stories.” A strategic part of Jack’s vision for the revived Kenya Baptist Theological College is a Missions School where African Believers can receive training in the things that will be shared at this scripture translation conference, thus the reason for redoing our schedule and registering for this conference when we learned of it a few days ago.

Another special photo from the past recently
edited for use as a  Nudge to Action for
Sub-Saharan African Peoples.  Remember
to check out this past week's nudges!
Thanks again for the many ways you strengthen and encourage us through your prayers, giving to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering and Cooperative Program, and sending personnel our way.  Thank you also for taking time to view the links listed below which can be added to your Mission ToolBox.  Yes, preparing this does lead to added work on my part, but we want you to share in the joy that comes from joining our Father in His work!  BERT
